More Answers On Adding Salt To Aquarium

Q. I have been advised to add salt to my aquarium. How does this help my fish?

Aquarium salt can help in preventing disease. Seek the advice of your aquarium dealer on this as there are many formulas to decide how much salt to add. Species such as live bearers and African Cichlids like higher salt levels. There are even special salts for these species (i.e. Live Bearer Brackish Aquarium Salt and Cichlid Lake Salt), and they contain other ingredients that increase the hardness and pH of the water, emulating the conditions of their living environment in the wild.

It is “not” necessary to add salt to your aquarium. See how things work out without the salt—if your fish are doing just fine, don’t bother adding it. However, if your live bearers start getting clamped fins and shimmies, then you should probably get some salt in quickly!
