Is Your Fish Tank Located At The Right Place?
Fact! A fish tank requires a strong and stable surface to be displayed on. You will need either a custom-built stand, or solid and sturdy table, or console to hold a medium to large-sized aquarium.
Many people do not realize how heavy water is, but if you’ve ever carried a plastic pail filled with water to the brim, you’ll know. An empty glass tank is already quite a weight. Filled with water, gravel, fish, filters, plants and ornaments, it can be extremely heavy.
You are asking for trouble if you place it on a piece of furniture that cannot bear its weight, or on an uneven and unstable surface. The end result is likely to be water, broken glass, and dead fish all over the floor.
Where Fish Tanks Should Be Located
Light: The tank should be in a place that receives some natural light, or good artificial lighting. It should also have plants or an opaque backing to provide shade to the fish. Natural light may encourage algae growth, while artificial lighting usually doesn’t. Both, however, help the growth of plants other than algae; and fish need some light, but never without shade. Remember that fish have no eyelids, and cannot block out harsh light like you can by closing your eyes.
Electricity: The aquarium should be close enough to a power point to let you operate the filter without stretching yards of cable across the room. The power point should not be positioned near the floor, in case of leaks from the tank.
The tank should not be located near electrical items that won’t take wetting, in case there’s a leak. For the same reason, keep valuable paper items, antiques and furnishings that shouldn’t get wet at a good distance.
Out of The Way: In every house, there’s at least one piece of furniture that people are always stubbing their toes against. Well, the tank should not be in one of those locations. The fish will be stressed from all the thumping and vibrations. It should not be in any place where people are likely to bump into it, or that is too noisy.
Water Source: However, the aquarium much not be so inaccessible that it becomes hard to change the water and tend to the fish. Ideally, it should be near enough to a tap and sink so that you won’t have to lug heavy pails of water through the whole house just to make a change.
Steady Temperatures: Fish that require stable water temperatures should not be in an area that sees wide temperature fluctuations through the day and night. Do not use a room where the air-conditioning is sometimes on and sometimes off; avoid a window in direct sunlight; and keep a safe distance from electrical appliances that give off heat.
Once you’ve these pointers sorted out, you may want to position your fish tank for prosperity and growth.
