Create Your Own Outdoor Koi Pond
Anyone who owns their own aquarium knows what a joy designing, watching, and caring for aquatic wildlife can be. Watching fish swim instantly instills a sense of tranquility and helps wash away your worries. It is for that very reason that many medical professionals advise patients with high blood pressure to consider building their own aquarium. Watching fish is a wonderful stress reliever as well as a fun and exciting hobby. If you want to experience the ultimate in building an aquatic habitat then you should strongly consider building your own outdoor garden pond.
Benefits of Creating Your Own Outdoor Pond
A garden pond can be a fun spring or summer project that has numerous physical and mental health benefits.
Not only that, but building a pond in your yard can even raise the property value of your home. Add some outdoor furniture to the mix and you have yourself a wonderful outdoor space for quiet reflection. By building your own pond, you can also begin tending to larger fish that require more space than an indoor aquarium can offer. Koi fish and carp are among the many outdoor fish that you can raise in your garden pond and are as versatile as they are stunning.
How To Create Your Own Outdoor Koi Pond
First determine the size koi pond you wish to create. You can do this by spreading a garden hose in the shape of the pond you are looking for. After that, decide how deep you need your pond to be. Generally a koi pond only needs to be about 2 feet deep. If you live in a colder area, then you may need to dig your pond a little deeper to keep it from freezing solid during the colder months. Dig your pond in varying layers of depth so that it has shelves for plants and to help hold down your pond lining.
Once you have dug your hole to the size you want, then you can set down your pond under liniment and pond lining. Once you have lined your pond, then you can use rocks to weigh it down to keep it from rising to the top once water is added. Just be careful not to tear a whole in the lining as this can cause problems later one. Use rounded or polished stones if at all possible to avoid unnecessary stress on the lining.
Next position your water filter on one side of your pond and your pond skimmer on the opposite side. Then dig a trench around the pond connection the plumbing between the skimmer and filter. The skimmer will run the pond water through the hose to the filter where it is redeposited into the pond. This will help keep the pond water from becoming stagnant which can lead to the production of harmful bacteria which can harm your fish.
Add aquatic plants and (good) bacteria packets to the pond water as soon as possible. This will help develop a healthy aquatic environment for your fish. After you allow time for good bacteria to grow in your pond, you can begin adding fish. It is best to add a few fish at a time over a few weeks to help your pond become established so that fish do not become stressed. Ask your local fish specialist what other small steps should be taken to help insure a healthy environment for your fish. Different fish require different criteria in order to flourish. Once you have established your pond community, then you can begin to enjoy all of the benefits that a koi pond has to offer.
