What Are The Common Aquarium Terms You Need To Know – Part 4
Here is the fourth installment of common aquarium terms which covers the alphabet D.
Daphnia: Also known as “water fleas,” these are common crustaceans found in freshwater lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams. They are cultivated or collected in the wild as fish food.
Detritus: Waste material that accumulates in the aquarium. It contains high levels of plant nutrients and should be removed whenever possible to prevent excessive algae growth.
Dorsal Fin: The fin located on the top part of a fish body. Most species have only one dorsal fin, but some have two, with one behind the other. Many species of clownfish have two dorsal fins. And in many Cichlids, the dorsal fin has two distinct parts—a spiny front portion and a softer rear portion.
Dosing Pump: A device used to deliver small amounts of chemicals and trace elements into the aquarium water.
Dropsy: A condition in which the body of the fish becomes swollen due to accumulated fluids. It is not a disease in itself but a symptom of various types of disease which may be fatal if not treated.
Please keep in mind that this list here is by no mean extensive. I will add them periodically whenever there are more queries. For now, I’ve divided this list into 7 parts in alphabet order.
