What Are The Common Aquarium Terms You Need To Know – Part 3
Here is the third installment of common aquarium terms which covers the alphabet C.
Calcification: A process by which corals and coralline algae extract calcium from seawater and deposit it in the form of calcium carbonate.
Calcium: A mineral that is the major building block of corals and other calcareous organisms. In a reef tank, calcium levels should be between 380 and w40 mg/l. Optimum calcium levels can be maintained through regular water changes or by using calcium additives.
Canister filter: A filtration system that consists of an external canister containing various mechanical filtration media. Water is pumped out of the tank, forced through the canister, and then returned to the tank.
Canister Filter: An external filter comprising a sealed canister containing various filter media and a pump that circulates water through the media. It is attached to the aquarium by inlet and outlet hoses.
Caudal Fin: The tail fin of a fish; it provides thrust and is used for propulsion.
Chiller: A piece of equipment used to cool down the water in an aquarium. Chillers come in different designs and sizes. They all featured a thermostat for maintaining a constant temperature.
Chloramine: A combination of chlorine and ammonia used in water treatment plants for disinfecting municipal water supplies. It is toxic to fish and can be removed by treating the water with a conditioner specifically formulated for the purpose.
Chlorine: A chemical used in water treatment plants for disinfecting municipal water supplies. It is toxic to fish. It is less stable than chloramine and can be dissipated for aquarium use by allowing the water to stand in an open container for 24 hours, or instantly removed by treating the water with a standard dechlorinator.
Chlorine: A substance used in municipal water supplies to kill bacteria. Chlorine is toxic to fish and invertebrates and must be removed from water before it can be added to an aquarium. A number of products are available for this purpose.
Cichlids: A huge family of fish whose vivid colors and interesting social behavior make them very popular with fishkeepers.
Community Tank: An aquarium populated with fish of several different species, which are compatible with one another.
Cory: Common abbreviation for Corydoras, a genus of small South American armored catfish.
Cycle: To establish the nitrogen cycle in an aquatic system by promoting the establishment of nitrifying bacteria.
Note: Please keep in mind that this list here is by no mean extensive. I will add them periodically whenever there are more queries. For now, I’ve divided this list into 7 parts in alphabet order.
