Is Your Aquarium Brim With Good Health?

Like humans, fish are subject to all sorts of environment stress in their daily lives.

Pathogens are almost always present in tanks, just as they are in air. The most common health problems among aquarium fish are infections caused by bacteria and fungi.

Infection can spread through skin parasites, or when fish ingest feces from infected fish or feed on the remains of deceased fish in the tank.

Probably 80 per cent of diseases in captive fish can be prevented by removing stress-inducing factors which could traumatize the fish, weaken their immune systems, and increase their susceptibility to disease.

Tips to Protect Your Fish from Diseases and Keep Them Healthy Always

What Are The Common Sources Of Stress?

There are at least two dozens of stress-inducing factors, but the most common sources of stress include:

  • Poor water quality due to irregular water changes or poor tank maintenance.
  • Too many fish in the tank.
  • Inappropriate diet/malnutrition (wrong food, food not varied).
  • Keeping incompatible or aggressive species in the tank.
  • Insufficient cover or hiding places available.
  • Wide fluctuation in water temperature.
  • Water is either too warm or too cold for the species.
  • Wrong pH level for the species.
  • Insufficient oxygen in the water.

How To Remove Stress-inducing Factors?

Prevention is better than cure, and the best preventive measure to take is to ensure that the aquarium environment is always ideal for your fish. Here are four simple and easy ways remove these sources of stress:

  • Carry out regular checks on the optimum efficiency of your aquarium equipment by using testing equipment.
  • Constantly monitor water condition. Use test kits to check ammonia, nitrite, pH, and nitrate levels.
  • Take precautions against introducing harmful elements into the environment, for example, buying and adding sick fish to the tank, or contamination from live feed or plants.
  • Keep a close eye on the fish themselves. Should there be any deviant behavior, or should any ailment arise, attend to the problem immediately so as to prevent it from spreading to the other fish in the tank.
